Am very, very sad to report that Steve Hochman's wife Mary Herczog passed away this morning. (Steve is Baconwrapped on this chat board). Mary had battled cancer for many years.....I most recently saw her last month at a house party/concert that Steve and Mary graciously hosted at their house in Silver Lake. That was the show that Paul Sanchez, Michelle Shocked and Craig Klein played. Needless to say, that was an emotional show.

Mary and Steve also lived part-time in New Orleans....she was a lover of the culture, food and music in New Orleans. Also a great writer. She will be missed. And that is an understatement.

I'm sure Steve will post something on the chat board in the next few days. In the meantime, I will try to find out info on the service, and how people can express their condolences.

This is incredibly sad news. For many years, I've followed Mary's various blogs; my favorite has always been 'Plucky Survivors'...

Even though she has been ill off and on for many years, she has lived more in those 12 years than most do in 80+. I am so incredibly sad that her story had to end and shocked and surprised that the end was so sudden. She was, and will continue to be an inspiration.

There is a MAJOR 2nd line parade happening today in Heaven!

I am so sorry to hear this. Running into Mary and Steve was one of the things I always looked forward to at Jazzfest-- it inevitably happened at the Music Factory or between sets on the grounds. Mary was a toal sweetheart and the look I just had at her recent blog entries made me tear up.

Steve, we're all thinking of you with sincere condolence.

Steve....please accept my condolences. From what I read, Mary was strong and had a good sense of humor, remember the best times, and she will live forever in your heart...

Steve, I am so very sorry for your loss---From your many posts here, I could tell that Mary obviously really loved New Orleans and hopefully the memories that you have of times spent together there will be a source of comfort to you.

                    Steve,

Eric and I are so very sorry for your loss.

Mary may be single-handedly responsible for the great experiences that many have had in New Orleans because her take on New Orleans, expressed in the Frommer's guide was spot on. We gave a copy to all of our friends who were New Orleans 'virgins' before their first trip.

oh, dear, BW. I am so very sorry for the loss of your dear wife Mary. What a loss for you and many she touched with her writing. May the many charms of the city of New Orleans always be a sweet reminder and a comfort.

We are so sorry to hear this. Mary fought that cancer so many times, and had such a great attitude about life. We thought it would never get her. We used to love receiving her food porn e-mails. We met her back in 2000 and she was always an inspriration.

                            Baconwrapped/Steve Hochman

Such sad news. And I'm from Los Angeles and had read Steve Hochman's reviews over the years, and had met him once at Jazzfest, but had no idea he was "baconwrapped."

Leni - yes, she did. She wrote the New Orleans guide, and the Las Vegas guide and likely others I do not own.

you could fall in love with new orleans reading her introduction - lol - without even visiting.
