It looks like everybody is getting involved in the celebration of the Grateful Dead's 50th anniversary. With the first two of five Fare Thee Well shows scheduled at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, CA this weekend, San Francisco Airport has named its flight paths after Grateful Dead songs and references. As seen in the picture above, some of the references are:
TRUKN (Truckin’), GRTFL (Grateful), TYDYE (Tie Dye), COSMC (Cosmic Charlie), HYPEE (Hippie) and DEDHD (Deadhead)
Apparently San Francisco airport has named its flight paths with Grateful Dead song titles or references in honor of the 50th anniversary Fare Thee Well shows in California this weekend.
20 predictions for Grateful Dead’s ‘Fare Thee Well’
Prediction #12: “Fare Thee Well” will be the happiest moment at Soldier Field in 2015.
Sorry Jay Cutler, but look on the bright side — this at least gives you an opportunity to smoke cigs on the field. Prediction #11: Trey will use at least three different guitars.
This is not going to be a Languedoc-heavy affair. After Jerry’s guitar mysteriously disappeared from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, expect some legendary axes to accompany some legendary music. Prediction #10: Bobby will sit in on at least one late-night show. Trey will not.
These days, Big Red goes to bed while the rest of us rage!
After more than five months of anticipation Fare Thee Well - Celebrating 50 Years Of Grateful Dead finally begins tomorrow night with the first of two shows at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California ahead of next weekend's three-night stand (July 3 - 5) at Soldier Field in Chicago. All of the hype both positive and negative will fade into memory as Grateful Dead members Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir and Mickey Hart take the stage with Trey Anastasio, Jeff Chimenti and Bruce Hornsby.
Now that the focus will finally be where it belongs, on the music, here are 10 things to watch for over the next two weekends: 1. How will they open the shows?
Starting to regret not being there, despite having had several offers/options to have pulled the trigger that I ended up passing on. I had a foreboding that it might end up turning into a debacle, but even that could be fun in the right frame of mind, snarking on the absurdity of the whole trainwreck spectacle. Hopefully the security staff at Levi's Stadium are intelligent enough to help things run as smoothly as possible, and I will keep my fingers crossed that traffic isn't a nightmare on the 880 and 101, but if it was me, I would be leaving a few hours earlier than what common sense would otherwise normally dictate.
Hope all Threadheads attending have a fine & funky (and SAFE) time, and if any of you run into an absolutely stunning young woman (not to mention truly brilliant, seriously she is one of the smartest people I have ever known) from Boston named Heidi, tell her that her old friend Matthew still thinks about her all the time, and sends his best....

traffic will be like it is on game day and by that, no problem really. Mid day on Saturday too so not worried about traffic much..
Despite the bag check bullshit it is gonna be a ton of fun, I am so stoked. I'll be looking for Heidi for ya Matthew. (makes illegal sign saying "hey Heidi where are ya?" then stuffs it down pants) First song? UNCLE JOHNS BAND. Last song, Uncle Johns Band.

You're a good kid Benny, although in all seriousness, I haven't seen her in 20+ years (we first met at Laguna Seca Daze in 1994, she had just moved to Santa Cruz after graduating from Boston University, I had just finished up my degree at the good ol' University of Utah) but we had an incredible summer travelling together on the Grateful Dead's Spring/Summer West Coast tour (Cal Expo, Seattle, Las Vegas, Shoreline) and of all the things I wish I could get a second chance at in this life, parting company with her would be the number one thing I would do differently, but I suppose that it does no good to dwell on the past...

Have a grate time at the shows, and be sure to buy an ice cold "Kynd Veggie Sierra Nevada" from a lovely little hippy gal for me....
Question that I should know the answer to.

With all of the extreme hype surrounding the upcoming "Fare Thee Well" Grateful Dead shows, does anyone know when the last time the 4 surviving "original" members (and I am not interested in arguing semantics about Mickey joining in 1967, you all know what I mean) performed live together?
It seems like it hasn't been all that long ago, and it also seems like there was practically ZERO interest from the general public, and not even that much buzz from hardcore Deadheads.
(I guess I am a bit in awe of the absolutely masterful job that the promoter has done in whipping up publicity and creating extraordinary demand that has been practically non-existent in the past 20 years since Jerry Garcia's passing)
