Talked with a friend of a friend the other day who caught Calgary show, Festival Express. Check out YouTube and watch this movie if you haven’t or again if you have. Met Jerry at Lion’s Share 1972 with Merle et al, then caught Dead with my Grinnell peeps at Iowa City, then Des Moines all within a few years. Later life, Captain Kentucky, RIP, one of The Merry Pranksters, and a friend and I, hung out in his office, hearing stories from The Acid Test Days when he ran with Kesey. The other night Boots Jaffee laid some more on me. Casey Jones is heading for TTF, not true, but I like it.

With much sadness and after great consideration of every possible scenario, the Playing in the Sand shows in Riviera Cancun on January 7-10 and January 13-16 have now been canceled by CID Presents due to the spiking COVID-19 cases. Dead & Company and CID Presents tried everything possible to bring normalcy and to deliver a great experience and amazing music, but with each day it became increasingly clear that canceling is the correct thing to do for the fans and for our crew. Well, at least Bob Weir is clearly still thinking about his famously loyal fans, as afterall, he gave them nearly a full 24 hours notice before showtime that the festival had been cancelled, and is said to even be considering issuing disappointed ticketholders who had already arrived to this year's gathering a generous 5% discount voucher (valid for selected Dead & Co. themed badminton shuttlecock sets or unicycle pedal wrenches) that will be good for use at next year's fest...

It's much like an elderly, 9-fingered drug addict from San Francisco once told me,

"Run For The Money, Caught Short On The Rent, Got Big Ideas, But The Cash Is All Spent..."

In fact, the refund policy seems quite generous to me.

CID said that that everyone with a package for the festival’s first weekend Jan. 7-10 would receive a full refund, and that anyone already at the Moon Palace resort or still planning to get there could stay for the weekend and still have their money refunded in full. Anyone booked for the second weekend, Jan. 13-16, can either stay home and receive a full refund or still elect to go to the resort and be refunded minus a flat rate of $600 a night for the stay, regardless of group size.

Fair enough, gotta give credit where it is due, that IS a very generous policy, and much, much better than I would have imagined.

(Still, the writing was on the wall as far as the Omicron atiuation goes, starting at least a couple of weeks back, I am honsetly surprised that any major public events have been allowed to go ahead since the New Year, although obviously each nation and jurisdiction has the right to set their own rules)

Yeah, our friends went anyway. They get to stay in an all-inclusive resort for a week for $2 grand (got 80% of their $ back). They say there's a lotta tie-die down there.

Sargassum is rampant on many Yucatan playas and elsewhere save Isla Mujeres and Cozumel. Climate change. All inclusive, ok, if necessary to be in that number, otherwise count TT out. Hang with the locals is my M.O. Cenotes, Bacalar, Isla, ya heard me. TTF headed thataway in dos semanas con mi hijos. The Dead died with Jerry!

We're in complete agreement, TT, although I think taking advantage of a great deal in an all-inclusive without having to listen to "Dead and Slow" is a win for them. We're obviously not in an all inclusive here. We live in a walkup apartment in an old neighborhood near the centro.

The couple next to me last night at The TTB at The Saenger cancelled their Play In The Sand trip and came to New Orleans instead and wound up seeing TTB. I call that a win.

Nice to see the Dead Thread back in play. I'm a little 'Jerry'd out' after the anniversary of his birth and death so close together. Put em back in the ground....or back in the river.
