  • remember what show that was? http://www.setlists.net/?show_id=2030

Cal expo was pretty loose with the freakishness that was sure. Outsiders really had a big old buncha culture shock the first time. I remember my doofus brother, walking around in his cruise wear acting all cool wondering why nobody would talk to him out on Shakedown. Closest he ever got.

    • Saw Chris Robinson's Brotherhood at Cervantes on Saturday - and in my opinion these guys get it as close to the GD vibe then anyone. Not an exact copy - but close to the bone - alot of it reminds me of mid 70's - late 70's. A bit on the country/southern side but every once in awhile they really stretch it. And Neal Casal lays down some sweet runs - not to much speed in them that really let them build and make you smile. Saturday was great - even had a little bit of a Beatles rooftop vibe. Keyboards sounding like Billy Preston.

And of course CR is the real deal in my opinion - it's what it would sound like with Jerry mixing with Pen - bluesy hippie fun. Finished off with a great Sugaree.

Ride is really a good - crowd was just a dancing machine

      • I really don't, Benny, maybe '93 or '94.

        • Probably 94 it was way hot that weekend. Probably Sunday too. the day the guy pee'd on my photos. ( "I've been on tour for a year and a dog hasn't peed on my photos... you are smarter than a dog aren't you?" i said to the redneck big truck guy who did it) Last show at Cal Expo and things were pretty out of control by then. far too many people who did not belong there were there by that time. And the nitrous passers were sucking money out of the lot by then like crazy.

            • That is probably right, Benny, as it was hot, all right.

Hate the nitrous people (who now show up to pollute what goes on on Frenchmen St. during Jazz Fest/Mardi Gras/Halloween). It was the move from Henry J. Kaiser to the Coliseum was pretty much the start of it going South for me, when the "scene" in the lot became more important to many than the music.

But, hey, we still got the tapes!

Golden Gate Park bandshell. Love the bass drum too. Jerry pulls off those pants I'm thinking (and lovin' the opposite striped top as well)...

Some people think the style of those times was cringe-worthy. But I love it. I wish everybody would dress like that again!

(Stynger, you MUST get that jacket!)
