Swen, we saw a place on the Food Network last night that looked interesting (a bit hipster) and might work for your sis. "Surrey's Cafe & Juice Bar" on Magazine. We haven't been but the food looked great. Any reviews from the TH's?

I've been to Surrey's a couple times but only for breakfast. It was delish. But what I had was definitely not low fat. My fave thing I've had there was the chicken biscuit with gravy.

We went to Bayona last time we were there. Had a great time. Excellent food. Good service.

Also been to Surrey's for breakfast. Excellent food and great juices! Can be a bit of a wait for breakfast if you aren't there early enough.

Aha! So I wasn't the only one here riding last night's Guy Fieri party bus to Flavortown.

A friend saw the episode earlier and recommended I give it a look. I was skeptical, but it actually was good to watch it because it jogged my memory on a few places I've been intending to it. Chiefly, I need to stop talking about it and finally get to Katie's for that Cochon de Lait Roasted Garlic pizza. I tried last year, but it was mobbed.

After having many local friends recommend Surrey's as a place to get a healthy breakfast, I was shocked to see what they served on the show. Now I'm interested in the place!

Joey K's Shrimp Magazine also looked great.

I've always loved Tracey's roast beef po' boy and have followed local recommendations that it's the best in Nola, but I'm thinking I need to finally give Parasol's a shot. At the very least, I want to try that hot muffaletta. These lips won't get near a cold muff.

I saw another Food Network show this week...Top Five Hot and Spicy...and Liuzza's By The Track's gumbo came in 2nd! It is not really very spicy but it is fantastic. They interviewed Jimmy, the owner, and the cook.

Staying in the Bywater this year so would love any recommendations in that area. I am familiar with Elizabeth's, Pizza Delicious, and the Joint of course. All great. Oh, and Maurepas. What else is new & exciting there?

Press Street Station is in the bywater-the NOCCA place with students learning the ropes of culinary adventures. Haven't been though. LOts of places have opened up on St. Claude- Red's Chinese, Sugar Park - I've been a few times and food is good and they're never busy when I've gone so you can get in and out quickly. One of the best specialty pizzas i've ever had was from there- bacon, sugared pecans and goat cheese. St. Roch Market. Fatoush. Mariza. Arabella (next to Cajuns)-homemade pastas, Junction=burgers.

I trust you know Bacchanal already?

I'm looking for a few restaurant recommendations for my health-conscious sister, who will need a break at some point from the NOLA cuisine which I favor when in town. She likes low-fat, high-veggie, quality food, although doesn't need to be vegetarian. Any suggestions? Fich?

Hey Swen- Sorry I didn't see this, Vicki had to nudge me. The situation has improved over the last few years- not nearly as difficult to find something healthy on many menus. As a matter of fact I plan far less than I used to because most of the nicer restaurants have a decent option besides pasta with vegetables or something in heavy cream sauce. A new favorite of mine is Sneaky Pickle (http://yousneakypickle.com/) its vegan and good for a protein rich lunch. Another awesome one is Carmo (http://www.cafecarmo.com/) oh man its so good. HUGE salads. I believe they also serve meat dishes too. Really awesome eats. Of course theres Satsuma for breakfast/lunch. Almost all of their options are on the healthier side.

I'm forever in love with Bacchanal for many reasons, one being that they have fresh vegetable dishes along with cheese plates and bread for a little indulgence. I like Mariza (http://marizaneworleans.com/) in the Bywater. The raw vegetable salad is a work of art (and delicious). They have fresh delicious seafood as well. And pizza.

I wrote more but it didn't show up somehow --- sigh--- I often get the vegetarian chili at sugar park to go. They also have good pizza and sides. I'm often surprised to find a great veggie dish in unlikely places. For instance I had an incredibly delicious bowl of home style vegetable soup at Mandina's. I also had a large high quality salad at Willie Mae's while my friends were feasting on chicken. The salad was beautiful.
Places that serve Mexican style food are a good bet on Nola (though not always here in philly) I can't remember it's name but Aaron Sanchez' restaurant is super good. I want to go back there soon. I have mixed feelings about juan's flying burrito. I usually go there to eat junk food.
