  • I remember walking thru the French Quarter shortly after Katrina ( I think ) and there were people in space suits handing out flyers. "Jefferson Starship-free show in Congo Square". Sparsely attended, Kantner looking near death, more guys in spacesuits. Made for one bizarre afternoon. I left early and went home, cracked a beer in the courtyard as the sounds of White Rabbit blew over with the wind. Just a really strange scene.

Sounds more like something in the BennyBoy department.

            Again?

I have been told that they have stronger stuff in Poland.

              • "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" are overplayed and worn out. Dig deeper:

Word is that Bill Graham begged them to release it as the single but they resisted. Classic hippie logic.
Take a dose for Benny this holiday, you'll be glad you did.

Magic mushrooms definitely grow wild in Poland so MM has options.

I think that Steve and Chrissa did meet him in Cali somewhere.

Ben was complicated - but absolutely a mensch when it came to music, and particularly when it came to jam-grass bands and those bands' influences. My intro's to Leftover Salmon (saw Noam Pikelny sub on banjo with'em on his 21st birthday), Yonder Mountain String Band, and others, all came through Ben. I never got the full story, but camping with his krewe at High Sierra Music Fest was always one of life's enigmas - we shared camp, music & meals with the sober Wharf Rats camp! I used to joke that, aside from being a magnetic personality sort, that they might've been hoping they'd get him in their fold one day. I distinctly remember bringing Frenchy back to camp one year and it not being even the whackiest thing that happened that day. I could go on, but there are others here who might be able to share their unique perspective on the man. Suffice to say that I find myself doing a double-take when some Rad's fan sports a fish hat.

It will lack the excitement of pre Covid times due to A) It will be pretty much the same lineup they have been rolling out since Jan. 2020. B) Who knows if it will even come to pass...

i am more optimistic for jazzfest than mardi gras. call me crazy, but I think omicron is the one that turns us from pandemic to endemic ---- EVERYbody is going to catch it, vaxxed up or not, but the vaxxed will be fine, and the non-vaxxed will not. And if the S Africa experience is a guide, it will burn through communities so quickly that I predict omicron is a thing of the past by March 1, and that much of the covid nightmare we've lived the past two years goes with it. These may be rose-colored glasses, but that's how I'm thinking this next couple of months is going to go. (Full disclosure: along with the Mrs and my two kids, my mom, my brother, his wife, and their 4 grown sons all live in Nola. The brother, his wife, and one of 4 sons all have omicron right now. All are vaxxed and boosted, and all have very mild symptoms --- as my brother said it, 2 years ago he'd have gone to work that morning without thinking twice. Instead he was reading a positive result from a home-test).

Well written. I happen to be coming to a conclusion correct or incorrect that "covid fatigue" is setting in and people are just saying "Bull*hit, I'm done with this" and are going on about their business. Vaccinated or not, they are just reemerging back into normal activities. The press still has us alarmed and skittish, and in my mind rightfully so, but my friends are just moving on. Some get sick and some don't. Some get very mildly affected by the covid and others have a spell of pneumonia like symptoms. But they are all just as I said, say "Bull*hit". I am not quite there yet but I can sort of see it coming .

No surprise that Los Lobos has just officially cancelled their planned Euro dates for the 3rd straight year, and with the impossible and constantly changing restrictions, I can't see any major acts (or in Los Lobos case, even smaller, "Mid-Tier" touring bands) attempting to play over here anytime soon.

The European live music scene, and in many ways the entire Travel/Tourism industry itself is on life support, and the future looks pretty bleak from what I can tell...

Two steps forward, one step back my friend. 2021 was better than 2020 and 2022 is gonna continue that trend.

Vax up people !! Do whatcha gotta so you can do whatcha wanna.
