JAZZ FEST @ NIGHT 2022 / The Grids!

I actually try and avoid most of these shows where they pair up a bunch of musicians who don't usually play together and are playing show after show after show like Ivan, Stanton, Medeski, Monoleon etc... They rarely rehearse and just jam around with each guy just doing what they do at all of the shows they play. The idea started back in the 90s when the Superjams started but those shows were usually at least rehearsed. At the very least it doesn't really matter when you get there as it's not like you will miss any particular song.

I have a completely different take on this. I come to NOLA specifically for these "jam" sessions. People who play together regularly can be seen regularly. These "jam" sessions are unique to the fest and while they sometimes fall short of expectation, they often don't; which can make for an absolutely magical and truly unique experience. I'm fairly picky about who I'll watch "jam," but there are a number of musicians who I trust in almost any circumstance to produce worthwhile art (probably because most of them are trained jazz improvisors like Medeski or Mobetta).

In an amusing Instagram video of Anders driving around town and passing every venue he'll be playing during Jazzfest, he did mention that there is a top secret special guest who will be joining him at Tipitinas 4/28. I'll guess Luther Dickinson who is playing an early show right down the street at Nola Brewing.

Don't count Jackie Greene out - he'll be in town 2 days later for a Republic show, then touring with Anders later in May.
