  • RIP Ronnie Spector

“Ronnie Spector, the powerhouse vocalist and teenage ingenue behind the ’60s rock band the Ronettes, died on Wednesday at 78.”

“Our beloved earth angel, Ronnie, peacefully left this world today,” her family wrote in a statement, adding that the star lost “a brief battle with cancer.” “She was with family and in the arms of her husband, Jonathan.”

“Ronnie lived her life with a twinkle in her eye, a spunky attitude, a wicked sense of humor and a smile on her face. She was filled with love and gratitude,” they continued.

“Her joyful sound, playful nature and magical presence will live on in all who knew, heard or saw her.”

The Ronettes, and especially Ronnie, were one of the sexiest acts ever. Instead of overdoing the cutesy-cutesy like The Supremes, they underplayed it with those understated moves, slight smiles and whatever was going on in those over mascaraed eyes. As Keith Richards put it at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, "These girls could sing their way through any wall of sound." I see them doing their little bye-bye wave that they used to leave the stage with. RIP.

      RIP Ronnie.

Besides her obvious hits with The Ronettes I always loved this one with The E Street Band, a 1977 cover of Billy Joel's tribute to The Ronettes, "Say Goodbye To Hollywood".

Also this one with Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, "You Mean So Much to Me" written by Bruce Springsteen.
