  • R.I.P. Tina Turner

Probably means nothing to most of you young kids but that was a woman and a half.

In November 1967, Pink Floyd was booked on what I believe were their first American dates to appear at Winterland with Big Brother & The Holding Co. and Richie Havens. They had visa issues and couldn't make it and Janis suggested to Bill Graham that he get Ike & Tina Turner who were appearing at the black club Basin St. West on Divisadero. I heard he hired them for $500 and will never forget Janis standing on the side of the stage all in white watching Tina with the hugest smile on her face.

    RIP to a true dynamo.

She could-would- and did steal the stage and spotlight from Mick Jagger and he didn’t mind a bit. That is no easy task.

Seems to me you mix James Brown and Tina Turner and pretty much have Mick's stage act. Bro was taking notes.

I believe the only time I ever saw her was with Mick at Live Aid.

She left an indelible impression though. Legend. RIP

I was lucky enough to see Tina several times and she always gave it her all.

She came to Australia a lot.

Maybe because there was a strong Australian connection, with her very influential manager Roger Davies, who guided Tina for about 30 years being originally from Melbourne.

Saw Tina once and was duly impressed. She was a badass. No doubt about it. RIP.

For those of us who matriculated birth of Rock and Roll, British Invasion, Motown; Nice and Rough produced immediate unequivocal vasodilation. Proud Mary for Humble Harry, a welcome pipe dream Angela Davis! Fast forward, Private Dancer Tour, Rupp Arena in Lex became Beyond Thunderdome with Teetertotter amazed at the intellect, resolve, strength and well yes, the legs of my boyhood groupie wannabe. Undeniably Anna Mae has ascended this Nutworld’s limits. May she R.I.P., hell no, May she shimmy the Saints in Heaven, Nice and Rough!

A news report on tv here today said that Jagger credited her with teaching him to dance (on stage, I presume), and that they were great friends.

They seem to have always gotten along famously. The Stones did help Ike & Tina by putting them on the big 1969 tour bringing them to a much wider audience.

I am not sure if The Revue had toured or appeared with the Stones in England before that but I kinda think they did. If so, their friendship woulda went back even before the '69 tour.

I thought I had seen backstage pictures.

My very first music festival was the Springtime Rock Jubilee in Reading, PA in 1974. Even today, I can still remember The Ike & Tina Turner Revue's performance, particularly "River Deep, Mountain High." Tina was stupendous. What a performer. RIP.
